Why is Flag Day celebrated

On July 9, the Chilean Flag Day is celebrated throughout the country; a special date on the calendar that seeks to celebrate and honor one of our greatest national symbols. Below we will tell you how it was born and why this day is celebrated.

How was Flag Day born?

On July 9, Chile's Flag Day is celebrated because it was so designated by the Government in 1974. On this date, the 77 soldiers who died in 188, during the so-called Battle of La Concepción, are remembered. in the framework of the War of the Pacific.

In this way, the Day of the National Flag of Chile was established by means of the Supreme Decree of July 1, 1974, by which July 9 was established as the official date.

The Chilean flag is known as "The lonely star" because it has only one star; which indicates that Chile is a unitary state, in a blue box, which symbolizes the sky and the sea. White symbolizes the Andes Mountains, and red, the blood of the brave Mapuche.

The flag was officially adopted on October 18, 1817. It bears a striking resemblance to the flag used by the Mapuche Indians, as described in the epic poem La Araucana, written in the 16th century by the soldier poet, Alonso de Ercilla. .
