Why and when is Solidarity Day celebrated

Every August 18 is celebrated in Chile , the Day of Solidarity ; a special date that seeks to celebrate and awaken in all citizens one of the most important human values that should prevail in our Chilean society. How was Solidarity Day born?

Solidarity Day is celebrated on August 18 because it was decreed by the Chilean Congress in 1994, in honor of Father Alberto Hurtado ; figure recognized throughout the country for his justice and social work who died that day in 1952 more than 65 years ago.

During this day several very important public activities take place. First, the visit of the President of the Republic to the tomb of Father Hurtado takes place . Second, the Solidarity Walk is carried out, which is attended by thousands of citizens who walk the streets of Santiago to the aforementioned tomb.

In general, Solidarity Day is celebrated throughout the month of August and during these 31 days, hundreds of activities are carried out throughout the country around this important value for the human being and society in general.
